Amazon just released the first official images from the upcoming Fallout series in a story with Vanity Fair, and the shots confirm much of what was seen in the trailer that leaked a couple of months ago—Brotherhood of Steel, ghouls, a female protagonist from Vault 33 in LA, and even Vertibirds. The released images look like they’re pulled straight from the games, which should excite any franchise fan.

Bethesda leader Todd Howard was directly involved with the show, working alongside showrunner Jonathan Nolan, brother to filmmaker Christopher Nolan and veteran of shows like Westworld, and worked on projects like Interstellar and The Dark Knight. Howard, who confirmed the show will be canon to the lore, talked with VF about bringing the games’ propensity for portraying a dark, violent world with tongue-in-cheek humor to the series.

“We had a lot of conversations over the style of humor, the level of violence, the style of violence,” Howard told VF  “…Fallout can be very dramatic, and dark, and postapocalyptic, but you need to weave in a little bit of a wink.... I think they threaded that needle really well on the TV show.” Part of the way they accomplish this is through Vault Boy, the game and series’ quintessential mascot, represented by the iconic cartoonish boy winking, smiling, and giving a big ole thumbs up. Howard explains that Vault Boy was given an origin story in the show, which he thinks was well done.

Nolan discussed how the world interacts with the three protagonists featured in the article, bringing their stories together and presenting a story and world where the dichotomy of good guy and bad guy is a continually blurred line.

There’s Lucy, the female Vault Dweller seen in leaked photos. Played by Ella Purnell, she’s young and naive, born and raised in Vault 33 in LA among the elite who could afford to buy their way into a Vault to live out the apocalypse. She’s thrust into the wasteland on a rescue mission (a quest straight out of the games) and comes face-to-face with the reality of the world outside the safety of the Vaults.

That world is a stark contrast to the vaults, populated by mutant animals, insects, and even people, horribly disfigured by the radiation and referred to as Ghouls. One in particular, a bounty hunter known simply as The Ghoul, is played by Walton Goggins. Goggins sees The Ghoul as a post-apocalyptic version of Virgil from Dante’s Inferno, who’s lived for a couple of centuries and lives a life of blurry honor, and he’ll play a sort of guide for the other two characters.

Then there’s Maximus, played by Aaron Moten, a “squire” in the warrior-caste society known as the Brotherhood of Steel, known for their iconic power armor suits that look like walking tanks. Maximus is an idealist, raised within the culture of the Brotherhood that worships law and order and restoration of the world that was lost, and if it has to be done at the end of a barrel, so be it. Moten likens Maximus’ story to an Arthurian legend and describes the Brotherhood as a mixture between the US Marines and the Knights Templar.

While there has been no official trailer yet, the show will debut on April 12, 2024, on Prime Video, so a trailer is not likely far behind.
