Marvel Studios shared the newest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday on X Tuesday morning, featuring the iconic Fox-era X-Men. The trailer opens with a foreboding cinematic tour of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. It is no longer teeming with students and teachers; in fact, the books in the library appear to be the only occupants, as the camera gives a bird’s-eye view of the otherwise vacant institution... until it zooms in on the spokes of a wheel. As the shot comes into focus, the familiar faces of Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto (Ian McKellen), are seen playing chess.

The teaser is brief, but the glimpse hints that the future of mutants in this world and timeline is bleak. It’s similar to X-Men: Days of Future Past if Wolverine hadn’t turned the tide. The school looks war-torn and dimly lit, with papers scattered everywhere, and the aged leaders discussing that death comes for everyone. The trailer ends with what appears to be a battle scene, showing James Marsden’s Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, dropping to his knees and unleashing a massive optic blast, followed by a black screen with text that reads, “The X-Men will return in Avengers: Doomsday,” and a countdown clock ticking down the seconds to the film’s release date of December 18, 2026.
