According To Neil Patrick Harris, Ncuti Gatwa Will Be The First Gay Time Lord In 'Doctor Who'

Doctor Who rainbow TARDIS

After 60 years, almost 900 episodes, and an international audience that has spanned the universe, Doctor Who is returning for its 14th season with its 14th doctor in the modern era.  This time, the doctor will be played by Ncuti Gatwa, who will be the series’ first gay Time Lord.  Neil Patrick Harris, who is cast to portray the Doctor’s nemesis in the upcoming season, is very enthusiastic about how the character is going to be played:

"I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he's glorious," Harris said of the former Sex Education star. "He'll be the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool, a sexier Doctor."

Ncuti Gatwa

As this news is coming over two months after it was announced that Gatwa was cast to play the Doctor, Russell T. Davies’s comment about casting Ncuti on the Doctor Who website can be seen in a different light:

“The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”

Thanks to Neil Patrick Harris, now we do know more, and we can eagerly await this spectacular spin on an old favorite.  It is expected to premiere in 2023.
