Puerto Ricans, music fans, and fans of cinema, rejoice! Deadline is reporting that Benito Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, has landed the lead role in the upcoming film, Porto Rico. Described as an epic historical western, the film will serve as the feature directorial debut of influential Puerto Rican rapper René Pérez Joglar, better known as Residente. Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Javier Bardem join the cast while legendary filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu acts as executive producer
Bad Bunny, fre.sh off his acclaimed Super Bowl halftime show, is an entertainer who needs no introduction. Releasing albums since 2018, Bad Bunny’s discography has been the subject of widespread critical acclaim, streaming and chart success, and fan adoration around the world. His sixth studio album, Debí Tirar Màs Fotos, was THE album of 2025 and recently won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, the first Spanish-language album to do so. Porto Rico will serve as Bad Bunny’s first lead role in a feature film, following his stream of supporting roles in films such as Bullet Train, Happy Gilmore 2, and Caught Stealing. A fellow legend, Residente is best known as a founding member of the acclaimed Puerto Rican rap group, Calle 13.
Executive producer Alejandro González Iñárritu is best known for directing critically acclaimed films such as Birdman (or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Revenant, which won him two consecutive Oscars for Best Director. Between them, Edward Norton, Javier Bardem, and Viggo Mortensen have 11 Oscar nominations, with Bardem winning Best Supporting Actor for No Country for Old Men in 2008.
