The release date for Barbie is rapidly approaching, and with this comes the ruling for other countries to run the film theatrically. Vietnam has elected to ban the film due to a scene where an image of the nine-dash line in the South China Sea is shown. The scene is currently unspecified; according to BBC, a senior official for the country described it as an “offensive image.”

The nine-dash line represents what China claims as its territory; it takes up almost the entire body of water.  Vietnam, among several other countries, contests this claim. Despite what an international tribunal has ruled, China’s capital city Beijing has refused to recognize any judgements and continues to occupy the area. It is an ongoing dispute.

Barbie will hit theaters exclusively on July 21, 2023.  A Max streaming date has yet to be announced, though if the film follows the general streaming platform trend, it will not be for a few months. The film follows Barbie and Ken as they go on a journey of self-discovery. Barbie starts to question her life as weird things occur, leading her to enter the real world, something that makes Corporate fall into a panic.  Deeper plot details are still under wraps. This is the first live-action installment to this degree in the franchise.
