Christian Bale’s ‘Thor 4’ Look Teased In Promotional Work

The Dark Knight. Patrick Bateman. That guy who fought dragons in Reign of Fire that one time. Christian Bale has done it all, from playing Jim Hawkins opposite Charlton Heston's Long John Silver to portraying Dick Cheney in biographical comedy-drama Vice. Bale is also renowned for his incredible ability and willingness to transform himself for a role, often gaining or losing significant weight to more accurately portray a character. Marvel fans are probably most excited for his return to a comic book character role, and thanks to a leaked photo, we have a first look at what Bale will look like as Gorr the God Butcher.

Bale is starring in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth Thor movie in the MCU and Taika Waititi's second time around in the director's chair. He will be joining Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson who will be reprising their roles as Thor, Jane Foster, and Valkyrie, respectively. Let’s also not forget that Korg will be back to run this show.

For those not in the know, Gorr the God Butcher is a supervillain created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic. He first appeared in Thor: God of Thunder #1 in January 2013. Gorr grew up on a barren, hostile planet, rife with natural disasters and dangerous predators. The planet’s natives placed blind faith in the gods. When his entire family was killed, Gorr questioned the existence of the gods and was thus cast out of his tribe. When he later came to realize that the gods really did exist, his anger at their perceived failure to save his people drove him to hunt down all the gods for allowing his family to die. Guess everyone needs a hobby. The somewhat not-quite-subtle parallels between Gorr and Bale's most famous role aside, we now have a first glimpse as to what Bale's Gorr will look like, thanks to leaked photos first reported by Murphy's Multiverse

Marvel Legends Series action figures, showcasing Gorr and others in the upcoming movie

Diehard Marvel fans will notice a few familiar touches with the Marvel Legends Series action figure— his pale complexion, for one, and the fact that the figure appears to come with All-Black the Necrosword, Gorr's weapon of choice on his crusade, which he took from supervillain Knull (the guy responsible for creating the Venom symbiote). There are also a few departures from his usual look. Most notably, Gorr in the comics has head tentacles, and typically wears black robes that contrast with his deathly pale skin. The costume creators in the MCU have often departed from “true to comic” looks in the past. However, their incredible quality often results in positive reception from the audience. The box art below gives us what will probably be our most accurate view of Bale in the role, at least before Marvel releases a teaser clip.

Bale is no stranger to transforming himself for his roles. While this is more likely the work of a talented makeup and effects team than a crash diet, the transformation is just another example of Bale's dedication to his craft. Thor: Love and Thunder will see the titular character, who we last saw joining up with the surviving Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame, team up with Valkyrie and Jane Foster presumably to fight Gorr the God Butcher. The movie is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022. Until then, enjoy this image of Gorr from the comics, head tentacles and all.
