When Din Djarin and Grogu start their next big adventures on March 1, one character will most definitely be absent from season 3 of The Mandalorian: Cara Dune. The former shock trooper in the Rebel Alliance, then mercenary and then marshall in the New Republic, who helped Pedro Pascal's titular character on some of his missions, was last seen aboard Moff Gideon's light cruiser when Luke Skywalker arrived to pick up little Grodu in the season 2 finale.

There were plans for Dune to return in season 3 and she was also rumored to be an important character in the spin-off series Rangers of the New Republic, which has since been abandoned by Lucasfilm. But after some controversial social-media posts regarding Covid-19 and the political climate in the US, Disney pulled the plug and fired Gina Carano, the former MMA fighter, who had played Dune in both seasons of The Mandalorian:

"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future".

The company later added that it had no intentions to recast the character.

This begs the question of what happened to Cara Dune.

Rick Famuyiwa, who directed episodes 1, 7, and 8 of The Mandalorian's third season, now explained that this question has been discussed in the writer's room: “Cara was a big part and continues as a character to be part of the world. It had to be addressed in the creative and [Jon Favreau] took the time to think about that.”

But he also put Dune's importance on the show in perspective: "...what has been at the heart of the show are the two characters — Din Djarin and Grogu — so ultimately it felt like a servicing of that, and around the Mandalorians."

Dave Filoni, who has been with Lucasfilm for nearly 20 years and is Favreau's trusted partner when it comes to Star Wars storytelling, confirms that Cara Dune is "a great character", but also admits that "now Season 3 is mainly dealing with Mandalorians and the Mandalorian saga, the Mandalorian tale."

"It’s a big galaxy and we have many characters in it — many characters are fighting for their screen time", Filoni continues before basically corroborating Famuyiwa's words: "The Mandalorian in the title is the story about the Mandalorian and his people.”

So, fans most definitely won't get to see Cara Dune in season 3 of The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau has put some thought into it, and her fate or current whereabouts may get addressed somehow even it it is just in a throwaway line by one of the other characters.
