According to Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic Jordan Ruimy, Disney is in a panic over the poor audience response to the test screenings of James Mangold’s Indiana Jones 5.

Multiple endings have been tested, and the audiences haven’t liked any of them. Amongst them, the least popular ones imply that Harrison Ford isn’t returning to portray the famous adventurer in future installments. Notably, one of them had Phoebe-Waller Bridge replacing Ford at the end of the movie, taking the mantle of the famous archeologist. But, of course, with Bridge, cast as the lead actress opposite Ford, in the equation, there was no doubt that the question of the handover of the mantle would’ve been asked sooner or later. Also, Ford isn’t young Indy anymore, so it would make sense that he would leave the role at some point, and with a rumored TV series in the works, Disney certainly needs to find a way to continue the series without the actor.

Regarding the plot, even though it is being kept under wraps, rumors say this next installment will be a time travel movie, which could be considered to be adding some fantasy to the franchise. However, although the latter often used elements of mysticism from ancient myths in its stories, like the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark or the Sacred Stones in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, couldn’t time traveling be considered by fans as being too much of an extreme in regards of the franchise’s roots?

Now, while fans are eagerly waiting for the release of this sequel, it’s inevitable that the decision-making during the post-production phase will determine the future of the franchise, which this time will all depend on Mangold’s creative direction since Steven Spielberg abandoned the project.

Mangold is known for having worked on critically acclaimed movies like Ford v Ferrari and Logan, but one wonders if the Indiana Jones franchise has any juice left in its reservoir. This may be Disney’s last chance to prove that there are other stories worth telling in this universe, especially after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull scored poorly in the 2008 ratings.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled for release on June 30, 2023.
