Embracer Group Has Completed Its Acquisition of Middle-Earth Enterprises And Plans To Release Several Films

The Embracer Group, owner of Dark Horse Comics and video game franchises such as Tomb Raider and Saints Row have bought Middle-Earth Enterprises. This company owns worldwide rights to the main elements of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It’s a purchase that is likely to be very lucrative, especially if  The Rings of Power series generates fresh interest.

The Embracer Group netted the Middle-Earth Enterprise as part of a pack of six companies for a cool 8.36 billion. The purchase covers films, stage productions, games, theme parks, video games, board games, and general merchandise. So it’s safe to say that they’ll soon recoup that cost.

They’re already talking about “additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien.” There’s a whole history of middle-earth in The Silmarillion that we have not seen yet, and there’s no doubt fans would love to see it brought to the big screen.

With the Embracer Group’s extensive experience in gaming, it’s a safe bet that something will be in the works for Xbox, PlayStation, or mobile phone formats in the next few years.

The Lord of The Rings franchise is far from being tapped out. Considering the amount of world-building done by Tolkien, and the number of characters in his books, the potential for storytelling is huge. It’s always just required the right team with imagination (and budget) to bring it to audiences. The Embracer Group’s initial comments indicate they have ambition for Lord of the Rings and that’s extremely exciting!
