Flying Bark To Animate First 'Avatar The Last Airbender' Animated Film From Paramount And Nickelodeon

The first of the three announced animated films for Avatar: The Last Airbender has found its animation studio. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation Studios have chosen Flying Bark Productions to be the animator for the still-untitled film, which we know will be following the original Team Avatar following the events of the original series.

The reality of producing an animated feature film, or even just episodes of animated series, means that not all animation is done in-house; thus, major studios will often team up with or outsource to foreign animation studios. For example, Warner Bros. features have often teamed with Australian studio Animal Logic as far back as Happy Feet to The Lego Movie to this year’s DC League of SuperPets. Similarly, Flying Bark. While based in Belgium, it has major facilities in Sydney.

They describe the film series as pushing the style and boundaries of hybrid animation, coupling traditional 2D animation with significant CG elements. The studio has worked on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesLego Monkie Kid, and the Emmy-nominated What If…? episode “What If… Dr. Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?”. While they currently have 350 employees, they are looking to recruit for various positions like 2D Animator, ink & paint finisher, senior 2D effects artist, 3D animator, CG effects artist, CG effects lead, CG layout artist surfacing artist, compositor, CG supervisor, and VFX supervisor.

The film will be directed by Lauren Montgomery, an alum of the original series who went onto Voltron: Legendary Defender and has also been attached to a Spider-Women spinoff of Into the Spiderverse. Franchise creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino are producing under the Avatar Studios banner.
