HBO Confirms Second Season For 'Game Of Thrones' Prequel 'House Of The Dragon'

The cultural legacy of Game of Thrones will continue with the first spin-off series House of the Dragons premiering on August 21, 2022. Despite the controversial eighth season of GOT, we are getting introduced into the fantastic world of George R. R. Martin with this prequel story of the Targaryen civil war, set 200 years prior to the events of GOT. For those fans that remain cautious about the excitement for new stories in Westeros, it might be a relief for them to know that HBO is confident enough about the quality of the new show that they recently began writing the second season.

Redanian Intelligence has revealed that the writing for Season 2 of House of the Dragon has quietly begun without any official announcements from HBO. But it is reasonable to expect some news about the renewal closer to the premiere date of the first season, to fuel the hype for the series among the GOT fans.

Writing new seasons before the previous one even aired used to be the norm for Game of Thrones a few years back, so this news doesn't come as much of a surprise. The first season of House of the Dragon wrapped filming earlier this year and is now in post-production pending its release next August 2022.

House of the Dragon Targaryens

The show will take on the bloody event known as The Dance of Dragons, a civil war between members of the House Targaryen that claimed the succession of the Iron Throne. It was during this era that the dragon riders killed most of their majestic beasts dooming themselves to eventually lose the dominion that their fire-breathing friends once gave them.

HBO programming chief Casey Bloys had already hinted to us about the renewal of a second season:

“Typically speaking, I like to take an approach where we will talk about what a second season might look like and talk about scripts. But we tend to like to see how a show performs. That said, if I were betting, I’d say there’s a pretty good shot that House of the Dragon will get a season two. But we tend to like things to air and give it some time. That said, on most shows, we’ll do preparation and put ourselves in a good position to move forward.”

It's good to keep in mind that pre-production can be cancelled in any second and we can assume that a second chapter of the Targaryen Civil War will depend on the reception of the first season.

With that said, it is hard to assume that the series will fall on its face after HBO executives bet for the highest production budget we have seen in a GOT series, and George R. R. Martin himself came back to work on the spin-off project.

It's not easy to tell when the new second season would air, but considering season one was shot during most of 2021 and early 2022, and the previous seasons of GOT had a successful release during spring, it is fair to assume House of the Dragon Season 2 might come at some point during Spring 2024.

Since the final season of GOT aired, HBO has come back and forth with the announcements about the production of multiple spin-offs, with the last news being that Casey Bloys revealed we won't be getting any updates for other stories until at least 2023. Until then, all we can do is hope that the first season of House of the Dragon will be the redemption of this fantasy world that many of us grew to love over the years.
