The recent box office numbers for The Karate Kid: Legends have not only suggested, but proven, that there is still more story to tell from the latest endeavor from Jackie Chan and Daniel LaRusso. The most recent film has grossed a worldwide total of $91.4 million, surpassing the original 1984 movie's gross of $90.8 million. This is a significant achievement, especially considering it's a number that was not adjusted for inflation.

Now, as to what the series looks like going forward, the film has received mixed reviews from critics; however, audiences have overwhelmingly enjoyed it with a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, a testament to its quality and entertainment value, after the film’s opening weekend audiences have dropped by almost 40%.

Compared to 2010, The Karate Kid, which grossed $351.7 million worldwide, industry insiders surmise that perhaps the sea could tell smaller-scale stories, especially from the six-season success of Cobra Kai on Netflix. This potential for smaller stories could open up new and exciting possibilities for the franchise.

If Legends is any indication, there’s still more to learn from Mr. Miyagi’s teachings—and more stories waiting to break boards and expectations.

The dojo’s not closed. Not even close.
