It’s been a few years since Game of Thrones ended, to the joy of some, to the dismay of others, but that doesn’t mean it was the last we’ll see of the people of Westeros and Essos. If you’re in the know, you are aware by now that a prequel series airs this August, The House of the Dragon, inspired by the book Fire & Blood by the creator George R.R. Martin.

Now, according to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, there is a sequel series in the works. This series is reportedly to focus on fan-favorite Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington. So far, no details have emerged about the series other than Harington will reprise his role as the character, and that it will clearly take place after the finale of Game of Thrones.

The Hollywood Reporter also states that this now puts Game of Thrones projects in the works at seven, also pointing out that it seems to show that HBO is taking a hint from Disney and going full world-building with its franchises. After Star Wars Celebration last month, Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Disney and Lucasfilm are doubling down on television series going forward for Star Wars. It’s no secret that Marvel Studios has been an industry standard for playing the long game with film franchises, world-building, and storytelling. At the same time Game of Thrones was ending, the MCU was wrapping up ten years of movies with stories that build upon each other, culminating in the blockbuster film Avengers: Endgame.

It’s too early to say whether this is the direction the big names in media are going, but it seems to suggest that. With seven projects in the works for the Game of Thrones universe, Disney launching several film and television projects, and the MCU chugging along, it’s safe to say these franchises are not going away any time soon. Even Avatar: The Last Airbender will expand its universe, with the creators announcing a deal with Nickelodeon to start their own studio focused entirely on expanding the world of ATLA and The Legend of Korra. With the growth of streaming platforms beyond Netflix to encompass nearly every major media company, this could be the path of the future. Our content craving culture seems to demand it.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction HBO takes the new series given the state of Westeros at the end of Game of Thrones. Jon Snow, for his actions in betraying Daenerys Targaryen, was rebanished back to Night’s Watch on the Wall. What’s interesting is that the Wall has a massive hole melted through it, and the Night’s Watch was essentially decimated in the defense of the North against the Whitewalkers. It will also be interesting to see how this impacts the release of The Winds of Winter, the highly anticipated sixth book from George R.R. Martin. With his hands in all these projects and the ever growing gap between the release of A Dance of Dragons and the next book, the debate over whether he’ll finish the series looks likely to continue. In the meantime, it looks like fans will have plenty of content from the visual spectrum to keep them happy.
