In 2017, director Rian Johnson divided the fan base with his unique style of storytelling in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. The oft-maligned film has continued to be a source of debate in the five years since its premiere. Recently, Johnson sat down with Empire to defend his film in general and his portrayal of Luke Skywalker.

This portrayal has Luke Skywalker behaving in a way that would seemingly discredit the man and his legend. Johnson argued against this perception in his statement regarding the death of Skywalker, “The final images of the movie, to me, are not deconstructing the myth of Luke Skywalker, they're building it, and they're him embracing it," he said. "They're him absolutely defying the notion of, 'Throw away the past,' and embracing what actually matters about his myth and what's going to inspire the next generation. So for me, the process of stripping away is always in the interest of getting to something essential that really matters.” In light of this, Johnson states he is “even more proud” of his film and story today than five years ago.

The Knives Out director was at one point set to return for his own trilogy of Star Wars movies; however, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has gone on record to state that the Johnson-led trilogy is on hold.  The hold is attributed to the director being busy making other movies for Netflix.  Johnson still holds a hope to return one day and is quoted as saying to Empire, “"It's just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn't get back in that sandbox at some point.”

Fans of Rian Johnson’s storytelling can see his latest entry in the Knives Out franchise, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, premiering on Netflix on December 23.
