‘Sonic Prime’: New Footage And Voice Actors Revealed

Things just keep looking better for the blue blur. New footage from the upcoming Netflix cartoon, Sonic Prime, has been revealed. In this footage, Sonic fans can get their first glimpse of not only what the blue blur will look like, but what he will sound like as well. In addition, several more voice actors have been attached to this property. Let's dive into what we know thus far and how these new developments fit in.

Sonic Prime is an upcoming Netflix cartoon being produced by Wild Brain and the famed Ben 10 team, Man of Action. The premise of the show will focus on Sonic being thrust into a high octane and high-speed adventure through the Shatterverse. Sonic's mission is to save the universe, and along the way, he will experience moments of self-discovery and redemption. The tone of the series has been revealed to be similar to that of fellow Man of Action production Generator Rex, a show that focuses on a super-powered teen coming to terms with his own identity.

The show, though originally announced back in February of last year, has been recently featured in a sizzle reel posted on Netflix's Netflix After School YouTube channel. It is featured alongside Netflix's other upcoming family and kid focused offerings. Even though the glimpse is brief, it is featured prominently and reveals a key factor that has been unknown for quite some time: Sonic's voice actor. The show is being produced in Canada, and due to certain Canadian content and union laws, a huge portion of the voice cast has to be Canadian. This is confirmed by a statement by Colleen O'Shaugnessy, the current voice of Tails, in a tweet she posted around the time of the announcement of the cartoon. Mike Pollock, however, has not made it clear whether or not he will be voicing the character.

The confirmed voice cast for the show features various Canadian voice over veterans including Deven Mack (known for Wynton Styles in Bakugaub: Battle Planets), Ashleigh Ball (known for Applejack in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), Shannon Chan-Kent (known for Pinkie Pie in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), Vincent Tong (known for MegaMan in MegaMan: Fully Charged), Brian Drummond (known for Vegeta in the Ocean Dub of Dragon Ball Z and Knuckles in Sonic Underground), Ian Hanlin (known for Sunburst in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), Kazumi Evans (known for Iris in LoliRock), and Adam Narada (known for Shingen in Dragalia Lost).

Of all the confirmed cast, only Deven Mack has been confirmed in a role, with him being cast as the blue blur himself, Sonic the Hedgehog. Fans have been quick to point out the similarities between his voice and Roger Craig Smith (the current voice for the games) and Ben Schwartz (the voice actor for the movies). Mack confirmed that he was voicing the titular character in a tweet in which he also expresses his gratitude for landing the role. He also stated that he is not replacing Smith in the games at this time, most likely alluding to some fans’ concerns of this being another Sonic X situation in which the voice cast was replaced to maintain consistency throughout media. This does not appear to be the case as of right now.

Are you looking forward to Sonic Prime and its release this fall? Fans of the blue blur sure have a lot to celebrate this year, with the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in theaters and the upcoming Netflix cartoon. All eyes are now on the upcoming Sonic Frontiers to see if it will deliver on the same level.
