The Box Office Predictions For The 'Masters Of The Universe' Movie Aren't Looking Good

As Masters of the Universeprepares for its opening weekend, the box office predictions don’t look good. The Global Box Office website projects earnings between $27 and $35 million in the United States, even though the film took $170 million to make. One of the major problems for the film is its target demographic. Masters of the Universe is most appealing to male members of Generation X, who grew up idolizing He-Man. The catch is that this demographic is the least likely to attend movie theaters, giving the film a bit of an identity crisis. Is it meant to introduce He-Man to a new generation or as a nostalgic trip for Generation X?

However, the box office can be unpredictable. The horror films Obsession and Backrooms are currently ahead of The Mandalorian & Grogu. While Masters of the Universe depends a lot on nostalgia, it is its own IP, so there’s no homework like three seasons of a TV show to watch in order to understand it. That could explain the low turnout for the latest Star Wars film. Masters of the Universe launches on June 5 and tells the story of Prince Adam/He-Man (Nicholas Galitzine) who is pulled from the real world to the land of Eternia after finding the Power Sword. In this new land, he meets up with Teela (Camilla Mendes), Man-at-Arms (Idris Alba), and others to battle Skeletor (Jared Leto).
