Executive-producer and showrunner of Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, Terry Matalas, sat for an interview with Variety. The interview covered a lot about the series finale as well as possible upcoming projects. For the finale, Matalas said, “I wanted it to feel like a proper send-off in the way that I felt watching Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.” The Undiscovered Country ended with the decommissioning of the Enterprise, but the knowledge that the crew’s legacy would live on through the Enterprise-A. He went on to say, “I definitely wanted the feeling that it could go on, that it was a passing of the torch of the last generation to the next.”

The final episode, The Last Generation, ends with the unveiling of the Enterprise-G which is to be captained by Seven of Nine with Jack Crusher, Ensign LaForge, and Raffi as part of the crew, setting the stage for more adventures to come. When asked if a spinoff series was his intention, Matalas said no, that, “for it to be a satisfying ending, it needed to be a satisfying beginning.” Like The Undiscovered Country, Picard had to end on a note of hope for the future. Although Matalas left the door open by saying, “At the moment, there’s nothing developed on it. But we talk all the time.”

Season 3, and the entire series, of Star Trek: Picard can be streamed on Paramount+.
