In the month leading up to the release of Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo released a final live trailer at 10 a.m. ET this morning. Even though Eiji Aonuma announced the trailer with little fanfare, the trailer itself subtly reveals several major details about the game.

The trailer opens with a beautiful shot high in the Hyrule sky accompanied by a majestic soundtrack as Link dives down to the main landmass. The game seems to borrow heavily from Skyward Sword with its skydiving and the mine cart segments in addition to traveling across the Sky Islands. Fans also get a first look at Link exploring a village in this new Hyrule The previously deserted Castle Fountain had colorful tents set up, indicating an active Hyrule military. Several Breath of the Wild locations like the Gerudo Desert, Death Mountain, and one of the spiritual springs make their return along with a shimmering Hyrule Castle.

The game will feature at least one escort mission where Link uses his trusty steed to pull a carriage of travelers safely to their destination. Link will also be able to use weapons while riding on horseback. Perhaps the most exciting revelation is that Link will have party members. One scene shows Sidon, the Zora champion, fighting alongside the player character. The new champions from the previous game all make a triumphant return, showing the game to take place shortly after Breath of the Wild unless all the characters pulled a Link and took a 100-year nap.

On the story side of things, the Owl Lad from the scroll in one of the earliest trailers is revealed to be an actual person, disproving the theories that it was Zelda or Ganondorf. It seems likely that this new character is one of the Zonai given the previous trailer’s reveal of Zonai charges. However, Ganondorf is back and boasting about a king’s revival and his new world. The darkness that encompasses Link’s arm is also heavily implied to be Ganondorf’s magic. Meanwhile, a mysterious voice, likely the unnamed Owl Lad, advises Zelda to put her hope in Link and his legendary blade, the Master Sword. Link appears to be the last line of defense against whatever threatens Hyrule.

After showing off the game’s combat mechanics, the scene moves to Zelda holding a mysterious yellow glowing object with a shape that points to it being one of the titular tears of the kingdom. She comes to a realization that there is something only she can do. As the music ends on the Tears of the Kingdom logo, Zelda urges Link to find her.

The Legend Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases on May 12, 2023 only on Nintendo Switch.
