The Showrunners For HBO's 'House Of The Dragon' Open Up About Taking Over The Franchise After D&D Departed
HBO is moving forward with its first, follow-up property to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, with new showrunners: Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. Game of Thrones was led for its eight seasons on the network by David Benioff and D.B Weiss; however, screenwriter Ryan Condal and director Miguel Sapochnik are the new showrunners who will provide this new property a fan-focused perspective.
“As soon as George pitched this to me, all the gears clicked into place. Telling the story of the Targaryens at the height of their power made tons of sense coming off the original show because we get to know Daenerys very well, we get to know the myth and legend of her family but we don’t know much about the Targaryens as they actually existed,” Condal told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s an intimate story; it’s a bit of a Greek tragedy about the house divided, a house that tears itself apart over a succession. Very Game of Thrones but very different from the original.”

Some fans are readying their comparisons to the upcoming Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power, which debuts only a few days after House of the Dragon on Amazon Prime. Condal and Sapochnik are equally excited to see the projects share the space from simply being a fan of Tolkien’s work as well.
House of the Dragon premieres on HBO Max on August 21st.
