These Actors Have Been Cast In Netflix's Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

Netflix Avatar The Last Airbender

It’s a great time to be an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan. After San Diego Comic-Con the other week with announcements about upcoming books and movies from the DiMartino and Konietzko’s Avatar Studios, there’s still the Netflix live-action adaptation of the original Nickelodeon show.

A slew of tweets from Avatar News has revealed more casting news about the upcoming show, which has been relatively quiet when it comes to updates. Roles cast for King Bumi, Kya (Sokka and Katara’s mother), Hakoda (their father), June the bounty hunter, and the fan favorite and meme-worthy Cabbage Man have all been announced. It’s also been announced that season 1 filming is wrapped. That being the case, a trailer is likely to come soon enough.

King Bumi of the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu, the only person who knew Aang from childhood still alive, will be played by Utkarsh Ambudkar. Fans may remember him from his part in Pitch Perfect as Donald of the a cappella rival group the Trebelmakers. King Bumi is an eccentric and maniacal earth bender and Utkarsh’s previous performances suggest he’s a great casting for the role. It also appears that they’ll “age up” Utkarsh, which makes sense given that Bumi, after Aang is found, is well over 100 years old, but can still throw down with the best of them.

Kya is Sokka and Katara’s mother, who tragically lost her life during a Fire Nation raid on the Southern Water Tribe, leaving Hakoda to raise the two heroes while also leading the Southern Water Tribe. Since Kya is dead by the events of the show, she will likely be featured through flashbacks. Rainbow Dickerson has been cast to play the role, and she’s previously been seen in Beans as well as appearances in several TV shows, such as Chicago Fire.

Hakoda, as mentioned, is Katara and Sokka’s father. Leader of the Southern Water Tribe, and after the loss of Kya, he and the other adult males of the tribe decide to leave the South Pole and join the Earth Kingdom’s efforts to fight back against the Fire Nation. This leaves Sokka and Katara under the care of their grandmother and having to grow up rather fast. Joel Montgrand has been cast to portray Hakoda. Montgrand was also in the movie Beans alongside Dickerson. He’s also made appearances in several short films and TV shows over the last decade.

Fan favorite June was a bounty hunter who had appearances in seasons one and three of the original cartoon. She rides a giant shirshu, a bizarre mix of a wolf and a mole that uses a whip-like tongue tipped with paralyzing barbs to immobilize June’s targets. In the cartoon, she was employed by Prince Zuko and his uncle Iroh to hunt down Aang to capture him, and conversely, in season three she’s employed by Zuko to find Aang in order to save the world. June will be portrayed by Arden Cho, who has been seen in Teen Wolf as well as Netflix’s Partner Track.

Finally, one of the most welcome pieces of news is the casting of the Cabbage Cart Man. A funny recurring joke from the original cartoon series, the Cabbage Cart Man was a side character who had the unfortunate bad luck of always being in the wrong place at the wrong time with his cabbage cart that ended up getting destroyed, thus leading to his cry “My Cabbages!” He gained a passionate following and became the source of many ATLA memes, so much so that in The Legend of Korra, there’s a segment in the second season where we learn that the Cabbage Cart Man went corporate and created Cabbage Corp. However, bad luck followed him, as his descendant was framed for corruption and arrested, losing his business. The original series’ voice actor, James Sie, will reprise his role for the live-action series.

With the news that season one has wrapped a teaser should be the next step and, hopefully, fans will get to see that in the coming months.
