Tony Gilroy Confirms 'Star Wars: Andor' Will Be Two Seasons Leading To The Events Of 'Rogue One'

Diego Luna as Cassian Andor

With the latest Andor trailer debuting the other day and less than two months until the show debuts, there still seemed to be some confusion about how many seasons the show would run for and where in the timeline it would end.

That seems to have been cleared up. Showrunner Tony Gilroy has clarified the timeline and length of the series. The confusion seems to have come from knowing that the show would cover the five years before Rogue One. Gilroy stated that the show will run for two seasons, and the end of the second season will literally take viewers right up to the first scene of Star Wars: Rogue One

The clarification comes from Disney’s virtual press day at today’s Television Critics Association panel. Gilroy stated that the first season would cover about a year in the timeline over the twelve-episode season. However, to avoid having to film for the next few decades, they decided to take four three-episode blocks in season two and make each block a year in the timeline so that by the time the final seconds roll on episode 24, it will run right into Rogue One.

Diego Luna, the star of the show and the actor portraying the titular character first introduced in Rogue One, also took part in the conference and made it known that he was glad Gilroy had decided on this format because it would allow him to be a part of it all. Otherwise, he said, the last three seasons would have to have been animated, and he would miss out.

The show promises to be one of the most exciting and darkest in the franchise, tracing the rise of the Empire and how Cassian Andor becomes the assassin and spy that fans loved in Rogue One. Along with Luna reprising his role as Andor, Forest Whitaker will be reprising his role as Saw Gerrera, the wild-card resistance fighter, as well as Genevieve O’Reilly returning to portray Mon Mothma, the Senator also moonlighting as a leader within the Rebel Alliance. They’ll be joined by other all-star talents by the likes of Stellan Skarsgård, Fiona Shaw, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller.
