Warwick Davis Talks About The Problem Some Fans Of 'Star Wars' Have With Ewoks

Star Wars fans are no strangers to debates. From who shot first to whether the Jedi or the Sith contribute more to balancing the universe. However, there is a more obscure debate in the galaxy. In Return of the Jedi, the Rebel Alliance receives some help from a race of teddy-bear-like creatures called Ewoks. Originally, George Lucas planned to have the Wookies in place of the Ewoks. Lucas explained in a 1983 interview that the point of the scene was to have “a sort of primitive society overcoming this huge technological society."

Warwick Davis, known for his roles in the Willow movie and streaming series, played the main Ewok Wicket. The creature befriends Princess Leia and joins the rebels in their fight against the Empire. Some fans enjoyed the spectacle of cute and cuddly creatures taking down a dark Empire while others wished the Wookies were in the role for a stronger narrative connection. Davis offered his own opinion on the debate, “Well, I can see both sides. I love the Ewoks – let's face it, I am a bit biased, Ewoks are the reason my career as an actor is where it is today (no jokes please). However, I can also understand the argument of those who say that they're too cute and don't fit into the Star Wars look.”

Davis also commented on the theme behind the scene, “I personally like the early concept drawings for the Ewoks that were more primitive. When the costumes were designed, various changes had to be made to accommodate the actors, so a compromise was reached. Even if the look did not make it through to the finished film, George's concept of primitive creatures bringing down the technologically advanced Empire certainly did, and it works great." Davis cast his vote for the Ewoks but he can sympathize with the Wookie fans as well. In the end, Lucas conveyed his message with a hopeful conclusion to the original Star Wars trilogy.
