The first arc of the Star Wars: Andor series served as an introduction into the world of Cassian and how his experiences led to his present situation. We met his surrogate mother (Maarva), met the friends he had on Ferrix, and saw the events he went through as a child (on Kenari) that helped shape his rebellious nature. The second arc began with him having to abandon all that he has known and trust the man who saved him from the security forces that followed him from Morlana One.

The fourth episode starts right where we left off with Cassian entering hyperspace with Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) and debating his place in the universe. Luthen tries to convince the future Rebel that his skills and life would have more meaning if he “gave it all at once to something real,” while Cassian says he would rather live, sleep, and do what he wants. Luthen’s words eventually strike a chord in Cassian, and he agrees (for payment) to join a team and help rob the quarterly payroll for an entire Imperial sector.

The episode also introduced several new characters from the Imperial side, including Major Partagaz, Lieutenant Blevin, and Lieutenant Meero. The introduction to these characters showed us the drama within the Empire’s ranks. We see the career-hungry Meero clash with her colleague in pursuit of the starpath unit that was stolen by Cassian and recovered after the battle on Ferrix. We are also reintroduced to the character Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), who we have always seen post-defection. This is the first time we see her while she is a member of the Imperial Senate. Much like Luthen, she is living a double life, posing as a regular citizen while planting the seeds that would eventually grow into the Rebellion. We also see the consequences that Deputy Inspector Karn and his company face after their failure on Ferrix.

The fourth episode of Andor was well-paced and gave viewers a few Easter eggs by mentioning Scarif, Ryloth, and kyber crystals. The series' tone and commitment to being different and original is a big part of the reason the show is so captivating to watch.
