Episodes three and four of Velma have arrived, and they are just as hysterical as the first two! This post will contain spoilers for episodes one and two!

In last week’s episodes, we got introduced to the characters and the main mysteries at hand. Velma is our lead protagonist, Daphne is a popular girl who was raised by two detective moms, Norville is this group's Shaggy (and he is head over heels for Velma), and Fred is a caricature of the stereotypical rich guy. The group is hilarious in their interactions with each other, and it’s a fun twist to see that not only is Fred the most unlikable character on the show, every character kind of sucks. It is revealed early on in the show that there will be two main mysteries that the group will have to solve. Girls are being murdered and having their brains cut out while Velma’s mom is missing, and no one is trying to find her. We also learn that Daphne was adopted and is working to find her birth parents. Episode two ended with a kiss between Daphne and Velma which is exactly where this week’s episodes pick up.

Fans have debated for years whether or not Velma is gay, straight, or bi, and we finally got a bit of an answer. After the kiss with Daphne, the girls panic, a bit unsure of what the kiss means. Do they like each other? Was it just a way to stop Velma’s hallucination? This is what drives most of episode 3, and it was an honest look at what it’s like to explore your sexuality and how much your life is about to change. The episode also pokes fun at how little importance society puts on mental health, and also brings to light the fact that when danger is around women are “educated” on how to protect themselves while men are left to go about their day. Velma and Norville travel to the local jail to attempt to speak to Fred, but he quickly makes it clear that not only is he not interested in talking but he also doesn’t know anything. The episode ends with a new location coming into view, the local insane asylum.

Episode four went back to focusing mostly on the string of murders across town. A new victim has been discovered, and the town decides that they need to make a “hot girl” list to figure out who the killer’s next target will be. Velma is given the task, and it leads her to realize that she may be bi. It also forces her to acknowledge the fact that while she is complaining about how much stock society puts into being beautiful, she is just as bad for shaming girls for being pretty. The episode acted more as a discussion on women’s body image than adding to the mystery, but it was really good. The biggest mystery is a clue Daphne receives that leads her to another new location, The Crystal Cove Mines, and a memory from before she was adopted.

I am really enjoying the show, and it’s truly disappointing to see all of the hate that the show is getting on social media. This is something we see far too often with female-led, adult cartoons. While shows like Rick and Morty, Family Guy, and Futurama have been around for years or decades in some cases, adult cartoons with female leads are typically ripped apart and canceled far too early. I am holding out hope that this show will find its audience, so it doesn’t become another victim of the Warner Brothers and Discovery merger

New episodes of Velma are available to stream on Thursdays on HBO Max.
