When it comes to storytelling, many consider that the main character is someone the audience follows throughout the story, seeing the conflict through their eyes. However, what if this isn’t always the case, and it is possible to experience a story from another perspective? OIn The Rings of Power, the audience mostly experiences the story of the Second Age of Middle Earth through the eyes of characters like Galadriel, Elrond, and Isildur. Though the question remains, are the main heroes of the Second Age of Middle-earth the main character? Or perhaps the story’s main character is the one they are all fighting, the one who is probably the most essential character in the story. Is Sauron, the Dark Lord of Middle-earth, and crafter of the rings, the true main character of Amazon’s The Rings of Power?

The Lord Of The Rings

Many argue that in the Lord of the Rings novels, Frodo is the main character of the grand trilogy set in the Tolkien universe. While they are correct to say so, the person who holds the title “The Lord of the Rings” is Sauron, who created the rings of power and the One Ring. Thus in the actual show The Rings of Power, it is possible to say that perhaps the main character of said series would indeed be Sauron.

RELATED:

Throughout most of the Second and Third ages, Sauron is the driving force behind the other characters’ actions, from his creation of the rings to his conquest of Middle-earth; most events result from his actions. However, The Rings of Power has done something that no other Lord of the Rings visual piece of media has attempted before until now. The Rings of Power is the first time Sauron has been humanized in any meaningful way. Through most tales set in Middle Earth, Sauron has always been in the shadows, a force of nature that the main characters fear, but he’s never been a true character. Sauron has never been someone we’ve seen in scenes, with his thoughts, feelings, and nuances that make him his character. Giving a villain human characteristics allows us to sympathize with them. The Rings of Power has done this and given us a characterization of Sauron. We see him in the forefront, played by the great Charlie Vicker, giving the character a depth and nuance that isn’t just the monster that most fans imagine but an actual person with emotions and feelings. It was a fascinating look at the iconic villain of middle earth.

Forging The Rings Of Power Forward

What Sauron’s arc is moving forward in The Rings of Power is hard to say. Outside, of course, the basic timeline of Middle Earth, the actual character, and his turn have yet to be determined. He has a relationship with Galadriel, the people of the Southlands, Adar, the rebel orc who forged Mordor, and many others. Will the series frame the show so that while there are multiple arcs throughout the show with different characters’ points of view, it revolves around Sauron? Sauron is the driving character behind it all. It will be interesting to see his arc develop as he begins his journey to control Mordor and forge the One Ring.

When all of this is said and done, we will look at The Rings of Power series, and while it was marketed as our hero was the real center of it all, it’s the villain. The Dark Lord of Mordor and the Lord of the Rings himself, Sauron.

The Rings of Power is available now to stream on Amazon Prime.
