Disney has been attempting to broaden the diversity of actors and characters in the Star Wars franchise in recent years, bringing in more leading women such as Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker (Sequel Trilogy) and people of color such as Moses Ingram as Reva (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Disney has even started to bring some LGBTQIA+ actors and characters into the franchise, starting with some Expanded Universe media (i.e. Aftermath, Doctor Aphra, High Republic) and moving into live movies and series such as The Rise of Skywalker and Andor. With the upcoming release of the live-action D+ series, The Acolyte, Disney has announced that they will be casting not one, but two LGBTQ+ persons in that series: Abigail Thorne, a popular YouTuber (Philosophy Tube), who is a Transwoman, as well as Non-Binary actor, Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games).

Stenberg’s character has not been revealed as of yet. Thorne will be playing a character named Ensign Eurus, but we do not know more about her character as of yet. The series, to be directed by Leslye Headland, who is herself part of the LGBTQ community, is set in the final days of the High Republic, the zenith of the Republic and Jedi Order. The series explores the emerging dark side that we know will eventually come to envelop the entire galaxy under the rule of the Sith. The series is set to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2024.
