Video games industry support developer Keywords Studios, one of the biggest outsourcing studios, has tried its hand at developing a 2G game using just AI. It didn’t work. Along with developing Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Keywords Studios was also experimenting with “Project Ava”: the project to see if it could successfully utilize Gen AI exclusively to create an original video game.

Keywords Studios CEO Bertrand Bodson commented on this project, saying, “Whilst the project team started small, it identified over 400 tools, evaluating and utilizing those with the best potential. Despite this, we ultimately utilized bench resources from seven different game development studios as part of the project, as the tooling was unable to replace talent.” He elaborated on this point, explaining, "One of the key learnings was that whilst GenAI may simplify or accelerate certain processes, the best results and quality needed can only be achieved by experts in their field utilizing GenAI as a new, powerful tool in their creative process."

Despite Bodson’s reassurances that Project Ava will never be released to the public, some video game actors have expressed their concerns over using AI technology in their industry. Victoria Atkin, the voice actress for Assassin Creed’s syndicate, called this out upon finding out that her voice has been copied, saying that AI is the “invisible enemy we’re fighting right now”.

Paul Eiding, the voice behind Captain Campbell in the Metal Gear Solid series, blatantly told would-be users of his voice:

“If you do not have written permission to use my voice, you DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION to use my voice, including AI use. Doing so is a violation of my legal rights and a real slap in the face.”

Bodson did go on to say that while he will be excited to see how AI can help in development in the future, the only place his company is using AI now is in automated customer service.
