A game of Tagges. Star Wars: Doctor Aphra 28 immediately follows up on the deal made between the team led by Sana Starros and the ambitious Ronen Tagge. Upon learning from Ronen that he was in league with Crimson Dawn, Sana agreed to aid him in assassinating his aunt Domina Tagge to take the Spark Eternal from her. Meanwhile, Boushh and his team of fellow Ubese mercenaries are hard at work protecting Domina and her assets from her various competitors.

Meanwhile, Sana and her team are taken to Tagge Space aboard Just Lucky and Ariole Yu’s ship, the Fleeting. Once they arrive, however, they find themselves in the middle of a battle between the fleets of Ronen and Domina Tagge. As Ronen’s forces board Domina’s ship, the Acquisitor, Domina takes out the Tagge Protoblade; a unique weapon used by the Tagges only in dire situations. After striking down a few of her nephew’s mercenaries, Domina leads Boushh and his group to retake the bridge of the ship.

As the fighting continues around them, Sana and her team manage to board the Acquisitor and head to the bridge as well. Upon reaching the bridge, they are confronted by Domina, who expresses her disappointment with Sana’s decision. Sana’s team puts up a good fight against Domina and her Ubese bodyguards, but the fighting is ultimately brought to a halt by the arrival of Ronen himself, alongside fellow Tagge family member Lapin. Domina degrades her nephew and claims he will be the king of nothing. To this, Ronen points out that he will soon have the entirety of the Tagge Corporation in his control. With her forces overwhelmed and her Protoblade running out of power, Domina is held at blaster point by Ronen. But before he can kill her, however, he is blasted from behind by Lapin. As Lapin reaffirms undying loyalty to Domina, Domina reactivates the Protoblade one final time to kill Ronen permanently.

Domina then thanks Sana for providing the confession she needed to justify killing her nephew. As Sana’s team expresses shock at her having been working with Domina the whole time, Sana demands that their debts be paid and that their destroyed ship be replaced as compensation. Agreeing to Sana’s terms, Domina offers her and her team a permanent position in her personal forces. Sana declines the offer, however, saying they have people to see and scores to settle. Using the Fleeting, Sana’s team flies to the planet from which Kho Phon Farrus previously contacted Detta Yao. Upon confronting Kho over their actions, Kho reveals that they know where Aphra, Qi’ra, and the Spark Eternal are and the plan that Qi’ra has in store; a plan that could kill them all. As the issue ends, the still-possessed Aphra arrives at the Amaxine Space Station, where Qi’ra is waiting with the Fermata Cage.

Doctor Aphra 28 is an action-packed issue that wraps up the Ronen storyline in thrilling fashion. The double-cross of Ronen by Sana is a fun twist that fits her character and creates an interesting dynamic between her team and Domina Tagge. It’s also a treat to see Boushh and his Ubese forces go head-to-head with Sana and the rest of her team. Though the most tantalizing development of all is the reveal that the Spark Eternal is going to use Aphra to help Qi’ra open the Fermata Cage, on the very station where Supreme Leader Snoke once lived. This creates intriguing implications for where the Hidden Empire storyline will go next. Could we see a confrontation between Darth Vader and a Spark-possessed Aphra? Will Qi’ra utilize Snoke’s old station to unleash the Sith spirit inside the Cage? We’ll have to see how this scenario plays out and if Qi’ra does manage to kill her true enemy.
