Who saw The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere this past Wednesday? We did!!! The opening sequence felt almost like a flashback…till it wasn’t and then before we knew it, we were in hyperspace a few popcorn bites in just riding along oohing and awing over the cuteness that is Grogu when we notice Grogu in awe of something as well. Did you see it? While fans only got a brief look there is no doubt what species that giant space whale could be – Purrgil! So, what are these creatures and what might it mean for fans to see them now in The Mandalorian?

Let’s start with what that animal wrapped in glowing shades of blue, white, and purple is exactly. Wookieepedia defines this life form as “a semi-sentient species of massive whales that live in deep space.” They come in various ginormous sizes ranging from that of a starship to what Wookieepedia just leaves at “ultra” and while beautiful these animals are not to be underestimated; in fact, they can be quite dangerous. They tend to live in large groups and enjoy traveling through hyperspace by creating simu-tunnels. These space humpback whales with tentacles in place of a fluke can travel at light speed as well. Additionally, this creature was the inspiration behind the Star Wars Universe’s invention of hyperspace technology. This is poetic in the sense that the relationship with them could be viewed as symbiotic as Purrgil feed on the fuel of starships as they zip across the galaxy.

Nothing in the Star Wars Universe happens by chance. With this in mind, it could be assumed that the recent sighting of this species in The Mandalorian has the potential to be significant. For instance, fans were gifted with Ahsoka in Season 2 of The Mandalorian and are beyond excited to see her character receive a series of her own. Ahsoka is expected to debut on Disney+ later this year. Speaking of Ahsoka, Star Wars Rebels fans know a few fun interesting details here. Ahsoka is looking for Ezra Bridger. It has been confirmed that Ezra will be in the Ahsoka series. He was last seen in Star Wars Rebels when he heroically helped to liberate the people of Lothal by putting himself as well as Thrawn and his minions in the path of Purrgil in hyperspace.

The intense scene has Thrawn thinking he is in the driver’s seat when he says to Ezra, “Whatever happens next happens to both of us.” In Ezra’s classic defiant tone, he replies by telling Thrawn, “That’s the idea.” Moments later the Purrgil breaks the glass of the ship in an attack. This distraction was part of Ezra’s plan for taking Thrawn out of Lothal. In the chaos, Ezra was able to disarm a couple of stormtroopers. Thrawn and Ezra are then seen in hyperspace with the Purrgil. Fans of the series know that they both survived. With Ezra missing, it becomes Ahsoka’s mission to find him. It is therefore safe to assume that the sighting of Purrgil in The Mandalorian could be dropping the breadcrumbs needed for Ahsoka to locate her friend.
