5 Predictions For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

With the release of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 coming this May, fans are excited and saddened that the trilogy is coming to an end. It has been quite the ride to get to this point with James Gunn being removed from the project back in 2018 thanks to some press created by “inappropriate tweets” but when the main stars of the movie said they weren’t coming back without him, Disney relented and brought him back.

Filming began in 2021 as Gunn needed to finish The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker and now we get to see a firm conclusion to the team that we last saw in Thor: Love and Thunder. But what can we expect from this final film in the trilogy?  Here are some predictions.

5. Expect Main Character Deaths

Even without the benefit of knowing the plot you can gather from the trailer itself that we are not going to see everyone survive this movie. If you can pinpoint specifically a couple of characters that don’t appear to make it, first let’s start with Rocket Racoon. He appears to be the main focus of character building in the movie and even Gunn himself has said he wanted to tell Rocket’s story, telling Entertainment Weekly during SDCC, “I knew that…what started me on the journey, was seeing who [Rocket] could be and who he was, where he came from.” And what better way to finish a character's journey than with their death? A second character we should see the demise of is Star-Lord himself. We see in a scene in the trailer, where Drax appears to be carrying an unconscious body but is he actually dead and they are honouring him?  A final surprise character death could be Drax as well. Dave Bautista has been adamant he would never return to the role after this movie just to “collect a Marvel paycheck” having told Variety and repeated on The Tonight Show.

4. Adam Warlock Won’t Be The End Antagonist

In the second movie, the Guardians not only faced Ego but in the first act of the film we were introduced to the Sovereign and their leader Ayesha. A society that prides itself on being perfectionist, and the top species of the galaxy. The Guardians appear to make a fool of the Sovereign and were ultimately defeated and sent with their tails tucked between their legs. The Sovereign then created Adam Warlock, who was introduced in a post-credit scene. The character is the ultimate killing and fighting machine whose sole purpose is to destroy the Guardians. In the comics, Warlock started as a villain but after being deceived by the High Evolutionary, takes a turn and became a hero and ally to the Avengers and The Guardians. And in interviews, Will Poulter, who is playing Adam Warlock says, “he’s in his infancy at this point of the story, so he’s really trying to [orient] himself in this world as effectively a newborn.” And James Gunn continues, “It’s kind of more complicated than [Adam Warlock being an evil villain] … But he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”

3. We Will See Other MCU Heroes Show Up

At the start of Thor: Love and Thunder we saw our hero working with the Guardians following the events of Avengers: End Game to help the world outside of our solar system. So it would not be out of the realm of possibility that Thor himself is going to make an appearance in this movie. We also have one more Marvel movie release coming this year, The Marvels, where we will see Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau switch POV every time they use their powers. Captain Marvel is out in the world of the Guardians so it is possible we could see a cross-over or even a post-credit sequence tying her into this universe. But given who the main villain is in the movie, we could see a whole lot of other Marvel characters appear in this universe. The High Evolutionary was known in the comics as Herbert Wyndham, and he was a scientist that helped in the development of comic characters Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Thor, Black Knight, Adam Warlock and Spider-Woman. So we could see any number of these characters make an appearance in some form or other. Certainly, Scarlet Witch has a stranglehold in the MCU but the future Blade and Eternals character Black Knight could make his debut in the new phase of the MCU.

2. Kang The Conqueror Will Not Make An Appearance

Ant-Man: Quantumania and even Marvel themselves have given us the next big universe-destroying enemy in Kang but the Guardians movies always seem to march to the beat of their own drum and never really truly fit into the problems on our planet as they did with Thanos and the infinity stones. Yes, a stone was the focal point for the first movie but it wasn’t a realized point for the Infinity Saga like all the other movies in the MCU. This means don’t hold your breath to see Kang get even a post-credit sequence.

1. Even With The Death Of Certain Characters We Will See The Guardians Continue

While we covered the possible deaths of certain main characters like Rocket, Star-Lord and Drax, we can see the team continue without them. There is still a fairly decent team with Nebula, Gamora, Groot, Mantis and Kraglin. But in the comics, Adam Warlock is a member of the Guardians and in other universes Captain Marvel and The Thing who we know is on the way with the upcoming Fantastic Four film in the MCU.

While we may see an end to the James Gunn-era of the Guardians, Disney won’t shy away from continuing to make movies as long as it remains successful and fits into the overall universe and while a fourth movie may not be in the next phase, we know at some point they will come back and help to save the universe once again. We’ll see how accurate these predictions are when Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3 hits theatres on May 5 worldwide.
