The release of Guardians of the Galaxy proved itself to be a lucrative decision and aided in expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From a film franchise, which included a holiday special, and a companion video game, Guardians of the Galaxy brought a refreshing new family of sorts to battle enemies along with a nostalgic love of 80s music. Now with the release of the third volume of the franchise, its main plot hints one of its principal characters coming to terms with his “turbulent past” and how if his team is unable to save him, it “could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as [viewers] know them.” The member who will be receiving this attention is none other than fan favorite Rocket.

According to The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 synopsis: “Our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere, but it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past.” While this takes place, Pratt’s character Peter Quill/Star-Lord will be echoing the audience as they come to terms with Gamora’s loss. With James Gunn at the helm of the third film, fans are excited to see the titular family “flying away together one last time.”

Written on Marvel’s official site, the synopsis of the latest installment does not directly mention the focus on Rocket. Rather, the plot reads as,

“…. our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own.”

Despite the change in wording, it is evident that Rocket is a central focus of the film. Described as “the saddest person or character in the universe” by Gunn himself, he aims to provide a deep dive into Rocket’s history for his viewers. James Gunn and Marvel could continue the Guardians series with a new cast later on if they choose to, but right now fans will look forward to the wide release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023.
