7 Scariest Moments In Non-Horror Games
Spooky Season is here, but only some of us, myself included, can stomach the hair-raising horror genre, especially in video game form. However, there are plenty of scary experiences in other games to give non-horror fans a thrill.
7. Dead Hand- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
In Ocarina of Time, Link travels between past and present to stop Ganondorf and restore peace to Hyrule. This involves exploring dungeons and awakening the seven sages. However, one dungeon has Link return to his childhood form to retrieve an item from the bottom of a well. As Link explores this mini-dungeon, he encounters a monster that can give adult players nightmares. Link arrives in a room with ghostly white hands sticking out of the floor. When a hand grabs him, the monster’s proper form, Dead Hand, appears. The pale white blood-stained blob with a long neck creeps toward Link and lowers its head to bite him. To make matters worse, Link has to let himself be grabbed by creepy hands to defeat the monster.

6. Descendants- Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
Treasure hunter Nathan Drake is having a blast exploring a tropical Pacific island when he uncovers a dark secret. A disease connected to a statue corrupted people of the isle into zombie-like lifeforms called Descendants. At this point, the game changes from an action/shooter to a survival horror. This sudden genre shift is sure to make players sit up as they desperately try to escape the cursed people running and crawling toward them.
5. Waking up a Guardian- Breath of the Wild
Breath of the Wild threw out the Zelda formula to let players explore an open-world Hyrule. Link gets to choose his own adventure on his way to fight Calamity Ganon, but there are plenty of threats lurking in Hyrule Field. During a peaceful stroll around Hyrule, the music grows intense and violent, and Link finds himself running or fighting for his life against surprisingly fast-hulking machines. Malice from Calamity Ganon leaks into machines called Guardians, which come to life and threaten Link. Some Guardians have lost their legs and can be easily avoided, but others can fly. Even at full health, these robots pose a significant threat to Link. Early in the game, players must sneak past these machines with all their nerves tingling to avoid being wiped out by their intense lasers.
4. Mila’s Secret Room- Psychonauts
Raz the Psychonaut enters the mind of one of his teachers as part of his psychic training. Mila’s mind is a dance party level where Raz learns levitation, but a hidden room reveals Mila’s somber past. If Raz makes it to the room, he finds a memory vault that shows Mila lost several foster children to a fire. A chest leads to a room filled with walls of fire while nightmarish slugs cry out with the voices of the children. Phrases like “Save us, Mila,” and “Why did you let us die?” surely put a lump in any player’s throat. This nightmare scenario puts a damper on Mila’s dance party.
3. Courtroom Explosion- Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
The Ace Attorney games are no stranger to the macabre. All non-murder court cases in the games can be counted on one hand. However, the 3DS release of Dual Destinies gave the series its first M-rating. During one of the court cases, the courthouse is bombed with Phoenix and friends still inside. Although the scene is relatively tame, this is the most dangerous that Phoenix has faced in the courtroom. A later game scenario references a terrorist bombing plot that brings real-world horror into the Ace Attorney universe.
2. Hanging Men- Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons
The touching story of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons shows two brothers on a journey to save their ailing father. During their adventure, the brothers come to a dark forest and must fight off a few wolves. Directly after this event, a trio of hanging men can be seen above the path. The brothers don’t react to this, nor are they mentioned again. The casual way they are introduced makes it seem like this is an everyday event. That thought is just as chilling as the hanging men themselves.
1. Jump Scares: Luigi’s Mansion
When Luigi wins a mansion in a contest he didn’t enter, he goes to the house and finds his brother has been kidnapped. Luigi, known for his cowardice, makes his way through the haunted house with ghosts and jump scares at every turn. Lightning constantly strikes in the background, and Luigi shivers while he makes his way through the dark mansion. Players would grip the controller tight whenever they were scared by a strange noise or a bright flash of light.
