Being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as an actor must be one of the most challenging things someone in that industry could do. It is pretty impressive between remembering lines, acting, doing their own stunts, and going through a press interview without spoiling anything. While some can successfully do it all, some struggle with the last bit.

Thanks to Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios put together one of the most complex and well-managed cinematic machinery in the film industry, and today the latter counts more than 100h of interconnected stories and a vast number of complex characters that give life to these stories. Among these characters, there is one of the most iconic characters there is, Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, who made his Marvel debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Holland is an impressive actor who, like the new recent comer Iman Vellani, seems to have been destined to become a Marvel superhero. His background in acting, dancing, and overall training ables him to show emotions and perform his own stunts impressively, as you probably have witnessed in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). But, unfortunately, one thing that apparently he did not train for is to not spoil everybody.

1. Once Upon A Time, There Was A Spoiler

Let’s go back to 2016 when it all began on December 9th. That day, Holland hosted a Q&A on Facebook Live to promote his yet-to-be-released movie at that time, Spider-Man: Homecoming.

This was probably Holland’s first Marvel press tour since Civil War came out that same year, and his solo movie was only released the year after. In any case, he handled the exercise rather well until he was asked the following question: “Did training for Billy Elliot prepare you for this role ?” The question was referencing Billy Elliot The Musical, in which Holland was cast after being spotted by choreographer Lynne Page for his considerable potential as an actor and his physical capabilities.

To answer the question, Holland said that his training and dancing skills helped him immensely when it came to filming action sequences. If only he would have stopped there. The actor proceeded by sharing how his stunt double was dunked in a lake at some point because he couldn’t perform that dangerous stunt himself. He said, “There was a few things that I couldn’t do. There was like, some time where they dangled my poor stunt double under a helicopter and dunked him in a lake.” The actor, realising his slip of the tongue, put his hand over his mouth and said, “This is live, isn’t it? I’m gonna get in so much trouble now. Oh no!”

In this spoiler, he was likely making reference to the scene where Spider-Man is indeed dunked in a lake. However, instead of a helicopter, you see Vulture carrying the hero in altitude until the latter releases himself from the villain’s metallic claws.

2. Spoiling two movies with one sentence

The following information leak occurred during the Spider-Man: Homecoming press tour in 2017, a few days before the movie’s release. At that time, Holland’s serial spoiler reputation wasn’t established yet. However, during this press tour, the actor probably earned it.

During an interview for French entertainment website Allociné, Holland was asked, “Is there a big storyline between this Spider-Man movie and the next ones ?” As you can read, this question seems tricky, as it directly implied that Homecoming was part of a trilogy and definitely pushed for the actor to talk about potential sequels. Something that he is not allowed to do without Feige’s green light.

Unfortunately, Holland walked straight into the bear trap when he answered the following, “Yes… There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker - and Spider-Man especially - to grow in the next two movies.” The actor immediately realised his mistake after he saw the faces of the interviewers, who were surprised about the actor’s unexpected reveal.

3. Spoiling Infinity War’s Space Trip

The following slip of the tongue happened during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote Avengers: Infinity War. This time, Holland wasn’t by himself against the mischievous host. No, he was accompanied by Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man).

During this segment, the actors were asked how much of the story they knew regarding the upcoming Avengers movie. Of course, they all answered that they didn’t know and proceeded to share their stories about how Marvel started giving them fake scripts to avoid leaking information. Kimmel then asked the group, “Who among you is least trustworthy when it comes to the secrets- ?” Amusingly, as the rumour had already spread among Marvel actors, they all pointed out the youngest actor. In return, the latter found it interesting to talk about his fake script story and said, “What I thought it was a fake script. Because it’s like, Spider-Man’s in space. I didn’t finishe it, but I- I found out it was real!”, without realising that he spoiled a major scene from the movie they were promoting.

Holland always seems genuine when he makes a mistake like such, and that is what makes these situations amusing for the fans. Despite being surrounded by his older co-stars, the young actor couldn’t help but leak information about one of the biggest movies ever made by Marvel Studios.

4. When He Spoiled His Character’s Fate In A Movie Theatre

Holland’s next faux pas is relatively uncommon because it happened in a movie theatre. During the week of the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely decided to surprise Marvel fans at an ArcLight theatre in Hollywood.

After being introduced by the filmmakers, Holland stepped on stage and grabbed the microphone; thrilled, he said, “I’m alive!” assuming the audience had already seen the movie, which wasn’t the case. Fortunately, some while later, McFeely confessed in an interview for Yahoo Movies that he was the one who informed Holland of such information, and it was thus his fault.

5. The Spoiler-Man Strikes Again

Tom Holland spoiled the MCU so often that we cannot help but doubt his understanding of the iconic Uncle Ben’s saying, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

On June 3rd of, 2018, Holland struck again, this time via an Instagram video he posted on his account. In the latter, the actor apologized for the lack of revelations on the second Spider-Man movie but revealed that he had received the script and couldn’t wait to read it. In the video, you can see him showing the movie title on his iPad. At that time, nothing had been shared regarding the said movie, not even the title.

We can’t confirm it, but there is no doubt this one seemed odd and might just have been staged by Marvel Studios for marketing purposes. In 2017, Holland did the same thing when Infinity War was still in the works when he opened a confidential package from Mark Ruffalo while live-streaming it on Instagram. Since the two actors are well reputed for spoiling their movies, Marvel might as well use them as marketing tools. Right?

6. Strange Spoilers Ahead

The Infinity War press tour must have been consuming for the actors involved, as they had to be constantly meticulous with their choice of words when answering questions during interviews. Regarding our Spider-Man, Holland teamed up with Cumberbatch for a significant portion of that press tour.

During one of the interviews, the actors were asked which one of them was more likely to get a line wrong during filming. Both admitted that Cumberbatch was, but Holland admitted that his co-star’s lines were more difficult than his own. Holland said, “He has to talk about so much Quantum Realm stuff-” before Cumberbatch interrupted him, saying, “Stuff, only stuff.”

Currently, in the MCU, the term ‘Quantum Realm’ has never been mentioned in any Doctor Strange movie nor used by Strange in another movie he appears in. In fact, the term ‘Quantum Realm’ has always been connected to Ant-Man and his movies and has been mentioned several times in Avengers: Endgame, in which the Avengers use the said realm to do a Time Heist to collect the infinity stones. However, Strange was not involved in it due to being blipped.
