The Best Easter Eggs In 'The Mandalorian And Grogu'

The Mandalorian and Grogu have finally been released. It’s a fun adventure with Din and Grogu, full of whimsy and cuteness. Not only that, but we get to see more of the Hutt Syndicate, and also Sigourney Weaver as a member of the New Republic. If you’re a huge Star Wars fan, you probably noticed some fun easter eggs relating to other Star Wars content, so let’s take a look at them!

7. BD Units

These little droids first appeared in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as a companion to Cal Kestis. Fans noticed, however, that these little guys are wandering around the New Republic base. While not a major thing, it’s nice to see these little guys making an appearance in the movie.

6. Holochess Creatures

Dejarik is the name of the game that Chewie and R2 played in the original series. It also made various other appearances in Star Wars content, including most recently, in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Well, technically, this time, it’s a bit different. Instead of a small virtual game, it’s come to life in the arena, where Rotta and Din are. The creatures of the game have come to life, and it’s up to Din and Rotta to work together to defeat them.

5. Carl Weathers

After the match ends, the creatures escape the arena. During one of these scenes, we see some Aurebesh behind one of the creatures, on a doorway. Fans have figured out that it’s an homage to the late Carl Weathers, as the sign reads ‘Weathers Apollo’, which references his character Apollo Creed in the Rocky series. It’s nice to know that even though the actor may not be physically with us anymore, his memory will live on in Star Wars.

4. Sabacc Cards

Lando Calrissian is known for many things, and one of those is the card game Sabacc. You can even play the game in the video game, Star Wars: Outlaws. While the game itself doesn’t make an appearance in the movie, the cards do. This time, however, they’re being used for a different type of game, bounties, and have the names of rogue Imperial officers listed on them. We see one being handed to Din at the New Republic base.

3. Snow Troopers

This is one of the first easter eggs we see in the movie. During the opening scene, we see some Snowtroopers being deployed to fight Din and Grogu, who are trying to capture an Imperial loyalist. These troopers were originally seen on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, and are being deployed once again to a cold-temperature planet, which is what they were designed for.

2. Martin Scorsese's Character

While this character isn’t an easter egg, his name could be. The food cart alien, Hugo Durant, whom Din interrogates, is played by the famous director, Martin Scorsese. His eyebrows even match. Hugo Durant’s name may sound familiar, as Jon Favreau voiced Rio Durant, an Ardennian smuggler in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Could the two characters be related to each other? While it’s not confirmed, it’s a very strong possibility they are.

1. Directors Cameo

When the New Republic comes to save the day in the end, it features some cameos from Directors of various Star Wars projects. It includes Deborah Chow, Rick Famuiywa, Lee Issac Chung, Doug Chiang (who isn’t a director, but is a legendary Star Wars concept artist), and the head of Lucasfilm himself, Dave Filoni. Filoni also appears in the salt bar on Sharkari. It’s cool to see these creatives get to be alive within the Star Wars universe.

While these aren’t all of the easter eggs, these are some of the major ones. I’m sure even more will be found the longer the movie’s out. Either way, it’s always fun to try to spot these and their references to past Star Wars media, as it reminds you how it all eventually is connected.
