A Live-Action Adaptation Of Taylor Jenkins Reid's 'Atmosphere' Is Coming From Laika

Laika plans to go higher, further, and faster! The acclaimed studio is setting up a live-action film adaptation of the Taylor Jenkins Reid novel Atmosphere, with acclaimed filmmaking duo Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck set to direct!

Taylor Jenkins Reid's historical fiction novel, Atmosphere, was published just last year. The novel centers on two female astronauts, Joan and Vanessa, who survive a crash aboard the fictional shuttle Navigator. The novel focuses primarily on the events leading up to the Navigator’s crash and the budding relationship between the two women and their journey through life together. Reid is best known for writing the novels The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Carrie Soto Is Back, and Daisy Jones & the Six, which was adapted into an acclaimed miniseries for Amazon Prime in 2023. While Atmosphere is set to be a live action feature, Laika is best known for their animated films Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo & the Two Strings, Missing Link, and the highly anticipated Wildwood. All their films have received highly positive reviews and received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Laika opened their live-action film division in 2021 and is currently developing projects from The Farewell director Lulu Wang, Spontaneous director Brian Duffield, and Dune and Doctor Strange screenwriter Jon Spaihts, which is intended to be his directorial debut.

For the past two decades, Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck have stood out as a remarkably compelling directing team. Fleck made his directorial debut with Half Nelson, starring Ryan Gosling, Shareeka Epps, and Anthony Mackie. Boden worked on the film as co-writer and editor. The film garnered widespread critical acclaim, secured Gosling his first Best Actor Oscar nomination, and is frequently cited as the film that established him as a serious leading man. Boden & Fleck would go on write and direct the sports drama Sugar, the coming-of-age dramedy It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and the A24 dramedy Mississippi Grind, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn. Boden & Fleck hit it big in 2019 with the Marvel Studios film Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as the titular heroine. The duo was hired in 2017 after an extensive search that also saw Ava DuVernay, Lorene Scafaria, Emily Carmichael, and Niki Caro be considered for the job. The film received positive reviews from critics for the performances of Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn, Boden & Fleck’s direction, and the action sequences, but received criticism for its screenplay and villains. The reception from fans was more mixed. Despite this, the film broke box office records and made over $1.128 billion worldwide, becoming the 5th highest-grossing film of 2019 and remains the highest-grossing woman-led superhero movie. In 2025, Boden & Fleck directed the action anthology film Freaky Tales starring Pedro Pascal. On the TV side of things, the duo has helmed episodes of The Big C, The Affair, Billions, Ms. America, Masters of the Air, and the upcoming Amazon series Criminal.
