The Alien franchise has had its ups and downs in recent years: while Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus (2024) and Noah Hawley’s TV series Alien: Earth (2025) are well regarded by both critics and audiences, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (2012) and its sequel Alien: Covenant (2017) didn’t necessarily meet the expectations of the fans and rather underperformed at the box office.

But this didn’t stop the 88-year-old director from returning to the franchise he started in 1979 with the first Alien movie: Aaron Guzikowski is set to write the script for a new Alien movie, to be released by 20th Century Studios and produced by Scott and Michael Pruss via their common Scott Free production company.

At this point, not much is known about the new project, other than it won’t be the sequel to Romulus that has been rumored for some time now, but rather a continuation of Covenant. Once again, it is set to focus on the amoral android David, who has been played by Michael Fassbender both in Prometheus and Covenant. There is no word yet, if Fassbender will return to reprise the role.

This new project isn't the first collaboration between Scott and Guzikowski; the two worked together on Raised by Wolves, the sci-fi drama series that ran for two seasons and 18 episodes on HBO Max between 2020 and 2022. The series marked Scott’s first directing role for the small screen in 50 years.

Guzikowski started his writing career in 2012 with Contraband, but he's best known for his work on 2013’s Prisoners (directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Viola Davis). Aside from Raised by Wolves, he also wrote the script for eight episodes of The Red Road (2014 - 2015).

It’s not known when Guzikowski will get to start on the script for the new Alien movie, as he is currently busy writing an original sci-fi feature film for Jon Watts, adapting a Philip K. Dick short story for Sony Pictures, and writing the adult-targeted animated feature film Death Stranding, which is based on Hideo Kojima’s hit action-adventure video game.
