DC fans have been waiting for years for a series that matched the magic of the early 90’s Batman: The Animated Series. It seemed as if HBO had struck gold with Batman: The Caped Crusader. The series is produced by Bruce Timm, who was a developer on the 90’s animated series, as well as J. J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. Sadly, it appears that HBO Max will not be airing the series. It was announced earlier this week that the series will instead be shopped around to other studios and no longer produced by HBO. It is unknown if these cancellations are connected to the layoffs HBO made earlier this year which affected over 70 employees, mostly from their kids and family department, or their cancellation of Batgirl.

The series, which is still scheduled to be released at some point in 2023, was described by the producers as being “Thrilling, cinematic, and evocative of Batman’s noir roots while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters.”

Other series that have been met with the same fate include Merry Little Batman, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical, Did I Do That to The Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story, and The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie. It is currently unknown which platform The Caped Crusader or any of these other series will be shown.
