Based on the Christopher Priest novel of the same name, The Prestige centers on two magicians who ignite a rivalry after tragedy strikes one of their acts. As Robert Angier and Alfred Borden’s obsession with one other continues to grow, dangerous mysteries begin to present themselves until the line between illusion and reality is blurred. His 5th film overall, The Prestige was Christopher Nolan’s first post-Batman Begins film. Released by Disney (under their then-named Buena Vista Pictures Distribution) the film starred Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Piper Perabo, Andy Serkis, and the late David Bowie. Critics largely praised the film's performances, cinematography, production design, twist ending, and Nolan’s direction, though they criticized the writing and score. The Prestige earned two Oscar nominations for Best Production Design and Best Cinematography, but lost both to Pan’s Labyrinth.
Its reputation has only brightened over the years; The A.V. Club ranked it as the 39th best film of the 2000s in 2009, while Empire Magazine named it the 66th greatest film of the 21st century in 2020. Additionally, the Writers Guild of America recognized its screenplay as the 82nd greatest of the 21st century out of 101 entries. At the time of its release, The Prestige was a moderate box office success and grossed $109 million on a budget of $40 million. The film celebrated its proper 20th anniversary this past Tuesday. Since 2006, The Prestige has frequently been hailed by Nolan fans as one of his best films.
The Prestige will return to theaters in 70mm, IMAX, 35mm, and Digital 2D formats on January 29th, 2027!
