Despite Box Office Failure, 'Masters Of The Universe' Succeeds On Prime Video

By the power of Grayskull, Masters of the Universe has been given new life on streaming after a disappointing theatrical run. Historically, the cinema has not been kind to the 80s classic cartoon, with the newest iteration being no exception. Premiering in 1987 and starring Dolph Lundgren, the first live-action adaptation was released at the height of the property’s popularity and starred one of the most popular actors of the decade. Still, it was met with an abysmal box office performance. That movie may not have been revived on home video, but the latest outing has quickly proven popular on streaming.

Nearly 40 years after that failure, Amazon’s MGM decided to take another crack at bringing the character to the big screen. Following multiple successful projects on Netflix, such as Masters of the Universe: Revelations, He-Man has had newfound success in recent years. This would lead one to think that a new movie would be the best step forward for Amazon. Premiering June 5th with a budget of $170 million, Masters of the Universe failed to break even, grossing only $114 million globally by the end of its theatrical run. 

Fortunately for fans, there may still be a light at the end of the tunnel. When Nielsen released their streaming ranking for the week of July 20-26, Masters of the Universe was the most streamed movie or TV show across all platforms during its first week released. Clocking in at 1.17 billion minutes streamed, this even beat out the juggernaut that is The Big Bang Theory, which had 1.12 billion minutes streamed.
