Dungeon Crawler Carl is hot. The books that started on the site Royal Road back in 2019 have taken the speculative fiction world by storm, and the storm surge has spread into tabletop gaming — naturally — and Hollywood. Fuzzy Door, the production company owned by Seth MacFarlane, picked up the show, and Peacock subsequently ordered it as a straight-to-series. If you’re unfamiliar with that, it’s when a studio skips the pilot process and just orders a complete season, or more. It’s that popular right now. The effects of it are also being seen across the publishing sphere, with multiple other LitRPG projects like Wandering Inn and He Who Fights With Monsters getting trade print editions of their previously self-published work.

With production and casting in full swing, it was recently revealed through Deadline that the show, which also recently put out calls for writers — and was flooded with applications — now has its showrunners. The roles have fallen on veteran writers Chris Yost and Eric Heisserer. Yost is no stranger to the sci-fi world of Hollywood, having worked on the Thor movies and was an executive consultant and writer for The Mandalorian and other Star Wars Projects. He was also a writer for Dungeon Crawler Carlbefore being named co-showrunner.

Heisserer has showrunner experience, having been so for Shadow and Bone, another book-to-film adaptation. Speaking of which, he was the writer for the adaptation of Birdbox on Netflix. He also has an original screenplay being produced for Amazon Studios called Mysteria. Both men are also slated to executive produce alongside MacFarlane and his fellow Fuzzy Door colleagues Erica Huggins and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald.

So far, only Jeff Hays, the voice of the audiobooks and the owner of the audiobook’s production company, Soundbooth Theater, has been named for the cast, playing the role of the beloved Princess Donut, Carl’s ex-girlfriend’s talking cat. There is no premiere date yet mentioned, but the gears are turning on this highly anticipated show.
