To say that the marketing for the BBC Centenary special for Doctor Who has been lacking is an understatement. To wit, we finally have a premiere date, and it is fifteen days away. On Saturday, the BBC released the full trailer for “The Power of the Doctor”, and confirmed its October 23 premiere date.

It had long been known that the Centenary would be airing in October because the BBC was founded in October 1922. It was announced in July 2021 that Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall would be stepping down after the third special that the ninth episode of series 13 became. This is that third special. Thirteen’s regeneration into Ncuti Gatwa’s Fourteenth Doctor will occur in the episode, though while his debut is expected, it’s not yet confirmed.

As for the marketing, fans had gotten very little since the next episode teaser at the end of the previous special “Legend of the Sea Devils” which aired back in April. The special’s title was only revealed through Doctor Who Magazine a few weeks ago, and the airdate originally became public due to sleuthing from TVZone last week. Images have been shared sure, but they come from scenes already somewhat known. It had been rather frustrating how sparse even the most surface details had come out.

Plot details have also been vague. Seismologists and paintings have disappeared, and there’s another space train! Classic companions Tegan and Ace, played by Janet Fielding and Sophie Aldred respectively, will be making their returns to the television series since they left decades ago. Characters who have been introduced or returned during the Thirteenth Doctor era, such as The Master, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and Vinder will also be appearing. All had been absent since at least series 13, Flux, ended. Once “The Power of the Doctor” airs, hopefully, we’ll get a better picture of what 2023 will hold for the show as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.
