‘Doctor Who’ Releases New Teaser For 60th Anniversary Specials

There may not be a Doctor Who Christmas special this year, or even a New Year’s special next week, but there was no way incoming and returning showrunner Russell T. Davies was going to leave fans empty-handed. Thus, the BBC released a teaser trailer on Christmas Day for the 60th-anniversary specials airing next November, starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor.

In truth, this uses a lot of the same footage as the teaser that aired after the BBC Centenary special “The Power of the Doctor” in October but provides plenty of new bits to provide more insight into the details of the story. Makes sense, to keep as much in secrecy as possible. Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate, says to her mother that sometimes she thinks something is missing. She had something lovely and it’s gone. She’s still got the mind of a Time Lord and the memories of her time with Ten suppressed within her, as performed in 2008’s “Journey’s End”. Of course, now he’s back in that face. And yes, Jacqueline King has returned as Sylvia Noble, Donna’s mother. There’s a bit more of Neil Patrick Harris’s mysterious character. The Celestial Toymaker? The Valeyard? That’s still part of the secrecy.

There are also our first looks at Yasmin Finney as Rose, Donna’s daughter. Karl Collins is also seen returning as Shaun Temple, Donna’s husband, following very minor appearances in “The End of Time”, which was the Noble family’s most recent. Ruth Madeley, with whom Davies previously worked on Years and Years, will be appearing as the new character Shirley Anne Bingham. Years and Years aired on HBO in the United States. But it’s not just the human cast adding intrigue to these specials. Two creatures originating from series comics are set to make their live-action debuts here Wrarth Warriors, an insectoid race built from the five strongest species of the Wrarth Galaxy to hunt the Meeps, which they did…except for Beep the Meep, who is the other debut here. They’re quite furry little creatures. Word has it from some sharp listeners that Beep might be voiced by Miriam Margoyles. And once again, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor asks someone to tell him what the hell is going on. Guess we’re going to be seeing that a lot until it’s time to start promoting next Christmas’s special, his first adventure.

When Doctor Who returns with these specials in November, they’ll be on Disney+ everywhere but in the UK, where it remains on the BBC.
