First Day Box Office Figures For 'Jurassic World: Rebirth' Revealed, Setting Expectations For The Holiday Weekend

Jurassic Park debuted in 1993, and here we are, 30 years later, and the franchise is still kicking. For the most part. This weekend, moviegoers are expected to spend nearly $134 million to see the newest movie in the ongoing franchise, Jurassic World: Rebirth, and this is not looking like the strongest showing of the franchise.

With a five-day weekend to get in its first wave of viewers in the US, $134 million is below the first-weekend-box-office showings for the previous three films, and they only had a regular three-day first run. That’s not a great sign for what is supposed to be another trilogy for the franchise.

Critics were a little happier with this film, compared to the abysmally rated Jurassic World: Dominion. It’s currently sitting at a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 75% audience rating, where Dominion came in at a 29% critic score. Gareth Edwards, who directed the new movie, didn’t seem to be able to bring it back to the sort of rebirth (pun intended) that Colin Trevorrow did with Jurassic World.

RELATED:

The movie takes place during the Jurassic World era, where dinosaurs have repopulated their presence on Earth following the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali are mercenaries who are tasked with guiding Jonathan Bailey’s character to the fictional island of Ile Saint-Hubert, which was one of the initial islands used by InGen to do its genetic research on dinosaurs. Bailey’s character is tasked with getting the DNA of three dinosaurs on the island for medical research. In typical Jurassic Park fashion, humans playing god went wrong on the island, and the scientists made some truly horrifying new species that came back to terrorize the adventurers.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is out now.
