The score of Jurassic Park is one of the many stand-out parts of the film, and many of the subsequent films that built upon its foundation. Its soaring, optimistic tune is instantly recognizable to probably millions in North America and other countries across the world.

But John Williams is largely out of the film score business, and the Jurassic World franchise found itself a new composer in the form of Michael Giacchino. Now, though, they’ve found a new man to make the music: Alexandre Desplat.

Desplat, a two-time Oscar-winning composer, recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss his work on Jurassic World: Rebirth. His initial comments highlight the importance and power of John Williams’ original score before he changed gears to note how his music will feature “quotes of John’s music”. That work became a balancing act, deciding when to pay homage or chart a new course, while using the resources at his disposal (a 105-piece orchestra and a 60-piece choir). He finally noted that he didn’t consult with Williams for this new score, stating he has too much respect for the legendary composer to casually call him up and ask him questions about the work. He hopes that if or when Williams hears the work, he enjoys it.

Director Gareth Edwards shared his thoughts on the score, labeling it as “goosebump-inducing” and said it gave him chills.
