Game Shows Will Be A Part Of The Primetime Emmy's Ceremonies For The First Time In 2023
The Emmys are changing this year! The two organizations that distribute Emmy awards, the West Coast-based Television Academy (known formerly as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences) and the one on the East Coast (the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences), will be migrating a few categories between them. If previously only the Daytime Emmys awarded game shows, now they will be part of the Primetime Emmys.
Game shows and their popularity can be credited as one of the reasons for this. Consequently, the Academy wants to keep this type of television entertainment as relevant as possible in the public’s mind. There are a few rules on this transition though. These shows, according to the Academy, “must be self-contained or carryover (winner continues to the next episode) and cannot be arced”. These rules limit the migration of other types such as soap operas and similar ones that arc, can be rebooted, and/or have spin-offs. Those with the participation of children will still be part of the Daytime Emmys, but continue in the “Children’s & Family Emmy Awards”.

Considering everything, there are still some problems. There will be some name changes for certain awards to avoid confusion. Game shows like Jeopardy and Family Feud are classified under the category of “Outstanding Game Show”, but ones with physical skills involved will be renamed from “Outstanding Competition Program” to “Outstanding Reality Competition Program”. An “Outstanding Host for a Game Show” award will be created as well on the Primetime Emmys, making the transition easier for people like Steve Harvey (long-time host of Family Feud), who has been a major winner in the Daytime Emmys for the past few years in an analogous category.
Before this agreement, the organizations, according to Variety, split in 1977 over differences and remained hostile with each other for several decades following the separation. The Hollywood Reporter says a realignment occurred between the two sides in December of 2021, “shifting to genre-based awards rather than time-based”. The migration, though, will not be available for a long time. Game shows that want to take part in the Primetime Emmys are now in a window that will close on May 31st, 2023.
