Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay passed away at the age of seventy-eight at Alive Hospice in Nashville after a long battle with cancer. Godchaux-MacKay started her career as a backing/session singer. Her distinctive vocals can he heard on Elvis Presley’s Suspicious Minds, Percy Sledge’s version of When a Man Loves A Woman, as well as many other classics.

She joined The Grateful Dead in 1971 alongside her husband, pianist Keith Godchaux. Donna recorded vocals on six studio albums with the band, including The Wake of the Flood, the first on their own label.  She also jointly recorded with her husband and as a duo and as part of The Jerry Garcia Band (one of the side projects of The Grateful Dead).

The pair left The Grateful Dead with plans to pursue their own music as a couple, but Keith sadly died in a car accident a year later. Donna Godchaux-MacKay formed the Donna Jean Godchaux Band in 2009 and continued performing throughout her life. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Donna remarried bassist David Mackay, who stayed with her until her passing.  She is also survived by her two sons, Zion Godchaux and Kinsman MacKay.
