Hayden Christensen reflects on his time as Anakin Skywalker in a recent interview in Empire Magazine titled ‘The Master of the Darkside’. The issue comes with six stunning new photos by Norman Wong, one of which shows Hayden with a Darth Vader shadow.

The Canadian-born actor says that he was convinced that he was not going to get the role especially since Hollywood A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio were known to be up for the Sith Lord. Imagine what a different series Star Wars would have been!

George Lucas is praised in the piece, describing him as a supportive director, who helped Hayden work through his most difficult moments on set. He also speaks of him as a collaborative filmmaker, willing to take on suggestions. Hayden says that giving Anakin ‘Sith’ eyes, was his suggestion, although George Lucas needed some convincing.

‘George and I discussing giving Anakin Sith eyes. Originally, there was no mention of it and George was initially against the idea when I brought it up. I loved the visual of Sith eyes and thought it could make sense.’

The article reveals that the nicest guy on the Star Wars film set is in fact the Emperor, Ian McDiarmid. Apparently, the Scot is polite and soft-spoken until the cameras roll. Hayden says he keeps in close contact with Ian McDiarmid in real life, so the bond between the Sith master and the apprentice is still going strong.

Hayden and the prequels received heavy criticism from the fandom, and at points this became personal. ‘The character was criticised, my performance was criticised, and that part sucked.’ Hayden talks about the burden of taking on a role that came with such expectation, and how much he is enjoying his own personal Darth Vader-like redemption by rejoining the Star Wars Universe, filming scenes in Ahsoka and Obi-Wan Kenobi

It has been great to see him return, and hopefully, it's not the last we’ve seen of him. The article will appear in Empire’s April Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Edition.
