Fans of The Last of Us, a popular video game produced by Naughty Dog, got quite a surprise this week when an HBO Max montage showing everything that will be coming to the platform gave us a little sneak peek at the live-action show based on the game. The highly anticipated series shows the path of a smuggler that takes on a job for a group called the Fireflies. However what is being smuggled isn’t weapons or supplies, but a young girl that is immune to the fungi ravaging their post-apocalyptic world so that her biology can be used as a cure. This puts our smuggler into a predicament when he realizes that he can’t let go of this child for the greater good. The live-action cast consists of the smuggler Joel smuggler, played by Pedro Pascal from The Mandalorian. The immune teenager Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey of Game of Throne’s fame, and Joel’s hardcore survivor friend Bill will be played by Ron Swanson himself, Nick Offerman.

The Last of Us clips shown in the montage are very reminiscent of the game’s atmosphere and grunge. You can watch below, with the clips for this particular project starting around the 1:40 mark.

There’s no official release date for The Last of Us as of yet. The show will likely premiere in 2023, which is right around the corner! The show will consist of 10 on-track episodes that run with the original storyline, with some episodes deviating slightly from the original path.

The running theory in the fandom is that we will get a larger trailer on Outbreak Day September 26. Outbreak Day is a celebration of the series on the in-game anniversary of the day the fungus struck and took over Austin, Texas, which is where the game starts out with Joel and his daughter, Sarah (played by the lovely Nico Parker). Outbreak Day usually offers deals on the game, merchandise, and special edition items. It makes sense that the fans would get a tad bit more information about the new series that day.
