It Turns Out, 'She-Hulk' Was One Of The Most Successful Marvel Shows

Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, recently joined the Escape Pod podcast and revealed a surprising truth. Apparently, She-Hulkwas one of the best performing television shows for the studio. Winderbaum explained, “It just hit the general audience. So there was a mismatch between fan response and audience response.” She-Hulk was different from most Marvel shows as the focus wasn’t on heroics or her powers. It was mainly a lawyer comedy that happened to include superpowered individuals. This led to many hardcore fans dismissing it, but general audiences tuning in to the show.
Naturally, this begs the question if the show was so successful, why hasn’t it returned. Unlike Banner, She-Hulk is permanently in hulk form, leading to heavy use of CGI. The show had an overall budget of $225 million in part due to the constant need for CGI. Meanwhile, one of the latest Marvel movies Thunderbolts had a budget of only $180 million. Another Marvel series with lots of special effects, Agatha All Along only needed $40 million. So it’s possible that the absence of new episodes is entirely due to budget.

Another complication is that Marvel shows all have to fit into the specific canon. Beginning with Iron Man and including every subsequent film, and non-animated Disney Plus show, it’s very difficult to keep up with the Sacred Timeline without a large amount of red string. But even with these complications, the possibility for a series return remains. Winderbaum said, “I would love the opportunity to make more She-Hulk. Honestly. Hopefully one day. Maybe.”
