'Kung Fu Panda 4' Announced and Scheduled by Universal and DreamWorks

Kung Fu Panda Po

Po just said “Skidoosh!” to another theatrical adventure. DreamWorks Animation announced Kung Fu Panda 4. It is set to be released on March 8, 2024. Fresh off the Netflix series Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, which premiered on July 14, it will have been 8 years since the third film by the time the fourth is released. There was no other information provided, and the announcement image only featured Po.

One can only hope that Master Shifu and the Furious Five return in a substantial capacity. They have not only been absent for The Dragon Knight but the previous series in the franchise, Paws of Destiny, as well. In fact, of all of them, Mantis is the only one of these characters to make any sort of major appearance since the last film. That appearance was, in of all things, this year’s Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers film, in a scene that put him with fellow Seth Rogen characters BOB, 2019 Pumbaa, and Bob, the Viking character original to the film. Speaking of voices, Jack Black returning to voice Po in The Dragon Knight means their likely return for the fourth film will be their shortest gap between projects voicing the character.

According to The Numbers, the film will open against A Quiet Place: Day One from Paramount and The Magician’s Elephant from Disney. Strangely there is an Untitled Universal Animated Event Film just two weeks later, so whether it’s DreamWorks or Illumination, some sort of reconfiguration can be expected. There’s plenty of time to do so.
